Outstanding investment book August 6, 2010 VoraciousReader 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
As someone who owns a large collection of investment books, this latest contribution from Mr. Swedroe ranks at the top of the list. His gift is taking a complex subject and making it accessible to "the rest of us" yet not in any way "dumbing down" his presentation. It's the rare financial writer who can hold your attention chapter after chapter.
In this book Mr. Swedroe carefully but succintly provides superb information on asset allocation (with sub-chapters on the various types of equities, bonds, alternative investments etc.), even including valuable discussion on whether or not to prepay your mortgage vs. increase your tax-advantaged savings, and asset location (i.e., in which retirement or taxable accounts to place particular investments for maximum tax-efficiency. With tax rates going up in 2011, that's more important than ever).
When you read this book you will also see he has included cogent chapters on college savings plans, long-term care insurance, IRAs, Social Security, and determining a safe withdrawal rate for your golden years.
This is the kind of investment book you will refer back to over and over again. If you read just one investment book this year, this should be it.
Hooray for Another Gem !! August 22, 2010 K. Ibarra (Seattle, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you own or have read most of Larry Swedroe's books on investing (like I have), there isn't anything really new in his latest book. However, if you have not, and are into Do-It-Yourself financial planning, this book is priceless. Larry Swedroe's principles on index investing, risk management, asset allocation, portfolio diversification, choosing an adviser, fail-safe retirement withdrawals, and estate planning are concisely explained in this easy-to-read text. In short, this book summarizes all his previous works into a well written guide that removes the mystery and complexity out of financial and retirement planning. I started reading Larry's books when he first published in 1998, and it is so refreshing to know that his investing principles have not changed after 2 rip-roaring bull markets and 2 brutal bear markets that have followed. Unless you are a multi-millionaire with no concern about money, applying Larry's principles will not make you wealthy in retirement, but at the same time, you won't die poor and destitute in retirement either. Larry along with John Bogle, William Bernstein, Rick Ferri, Burton Malkiel, Jason Zweig, Jon Clements, and all the other wonderful Bogleheads, have truly given empowerment to the Main Street investor, and in so doing have made the so-called Wall Street gurus look like over-rated village idiots that they are. Larry, thank you for another one-two punch on enlightment and simplicity, and please keep the hits rolling !!
Excellent book for overall financial planning August 23, 2010 VegasTricia (las vegas, nv United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book was extraordinarily helpful to me when I was revisiting my financial plan. The authors have gathered a great deal of financial information in a logical format. I especially liked the concise, definitive "verdicts" on products in the Alternative Investments and Insurance sections. So many financial writers waffle on every topic--and retreat into a general, vague discussion of the issues. By now, I know what the issues are; it's refreshing to find someone who takes a position. Also, this book offered new (to me) guidance on using Monte Carlo analysis to determine whether Long Term Care Insurance makes sense. I also found helpful the references to marginal utility of wealth in sections dealing with how much risk to take; previously, I've looked at that from purely a numerical perspective.
I think a book like Bogleheads' Guide to Investing might be more accessible for people just starting their planning. I would highly recommend The Only Guide You'll Ever Need for the Right Financial Plan to everyone with some basic financial experience. I also appreciate Mr. Swedroe's willingness to answer investor questions on his MoneyWatch blog and elsewhere--that's really generous!
Great Financial Planning Resource August 16, 2010 JLP (TX) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Get the basics of creating your own financial plan with this book. Larry, as always, has done excellent job with the subject matter.
What I liked:
* The chapters are brief but give the reader enough information (most of the time).
• The chapter on alternative investments gives a brief description of each investment and a general thumbs up or down on whether or not the reader should use each investment. Of the 19 alternative investments Larry covers, only one of them gets his recommendation.
• The chapter on withdrawal rates has a nice discussion on the importance of Monte Carlo analysis.
What I thought could have been better:
• Although he talks about the benefits of creating an investment policy statement, Larry doesn't spend enough time on the topic. I would have preferred more indepth coverage of the IPS along with an example or two.
I didn't have much to complain about. This would be a great addition to anyone's personal finance library. It would also be a great gift to someone just starting out on their financial journey.
An excellent up to date book on investing August 18, 2010 SNOOKIE (ARIZONA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We have been an investors now for 75 years and we live on our portfolio income plus a little social security. Every time I buy a book on investing written by Larry I learn something new that will improve portfolio returns , reduce risk or both.
I recently annutized a portion increasing my fixed income allocation. I have followed Larry's recommendations now for twenty years because at our age we cannot tolerate making mistakes. During the recent market meltdown our portfolio survived and came through in fine shape. we did not have to liquidate any securities or take any losses. we were even was able to add some value funds to the portfolio at very good prices.
This book has it all and also shows the knowledge and experience of Larry's co-authors as well. This book is written for the experienced indexer with a broad and sound knowledge of indexing. My husband and I have followed along with thousands of other investors how to invest in index funds to achieve returns above those the market provides at reduced risk. Our slice and dice portfolios achieve above market returns with significantly less risk than actively managed funds.
What was very interesting in the book was the suggestions on how to increase or decrease your allocation to each of the various asset classes based on your age and risk tollerance.
Sprinkled throughout the book for each topic you will find little paragraphs supporting each suggestion . In many cases Larry supplies the odds of something happening or warns you about some event that may occur and destroy carefully made plans.
Of special interest is a list of financial products that are sold to investors by brokers and insurance salesmen that have no place in your portfilio. Many of these products are toxic. Larry and his co-authors dispose of these products with terse but accurate observations citing their sources.
My husband and I have been following Larry's advice for 20 years or so and we can report that our portfolio survived the recent stock market meltdown in fine shape.
One thing he always stresses is do not take on risk if you do not need more income, I always follow this advise.Thank you Larry. I treasure your advise.
